Cotton Planting Area Increases in Aksu Prefecture, but Yield Falls Year on Year
Recently, a research delegation from the China National Cotton Information Center and the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange conducted a field survey in the Aksu Prefecture. This year, the total area under cotton cultivation in the prefecture stands at 7.5216 million mu, compared with 7.2918 million mu last year, representing an increase of 229,800 mu, or 3.15%. According to available information, the Aksu Prefecture is the largest cotton-producing region in Xinjiang, with the main cotton-growing areas being Kuche County, Xinhe County, and Shaya County, which together account for 70% of the prefecture’s total cotton output. In 2017, Kuche County is expected to plant cotton on 1.2 million mu, a year-on-year increase of nearly 20%, and overall crop conditions are currently favorable. Significant Results Achieved in Xinjiang’s Cotton Target Price Reform
In recent years, influenced by the global economic situation, international agricultural commodity prices have fallen sharply. Under the dual pressures of temporary state procurement and storage programs, minimum market support prices, and continuously rising cotton production costs, domestic bulk agricultural commodity prices have gradually increased, leading to a widening gap between domestic and international agricultural prices. As a result, large volumes of imported agricultural products have flooded the domestic market, rendering tariff protection ineffective, driving up domestic inventories, and placing an increasingly heavy fiscal burden on the government. In May, the value added of textile industries above designated size increased by 5%.
In May 2017, the value added of industries above designated size increased by 6.5% in real terms year on year (all subsequent growth rates for value added are real growth rates adjusted for price factors), unchanged from April. On a month-on-month basis, the value added of industries above designated size rose by 0.51% in May. From January to May, the value added of industries above designated size grew by 6.7% year on year.
